Bone Graft

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure performed to provide the necessary bone support for implant treatment and other surgical procedures in cases where there is a loss of volume or density in the jawbone. Bone resorption that occurs over time after tooth loss can make implant placement more difficult. With bone grafting, the deficient bone area is supported to achieve healthier and longer-lasting treatment outcomes. The procedure is usually performed in a clinical setting under local anesthesia or sedation, and when necessary, it can also be carried out under general anesthesia in an operating room.

What is a bone graft?

A bone graft consists of biological or synthetic materials placed in areas with insufficient bone tissue in order to increase bone volume. These materials may be obtained from the patient’s own bone, donor sources, or biocompatible artificial materials. Over time, the graft material integrates with the existing bone tissue and supports new bone formation.

In which cases is bone grafting performed?

It is applied in patients who have developed bone resorption due to long-term tooth loss and in cases where there is insufficient bone volume for implant placement. It is also preferred for bone defects formed after cyst surgeries and in situations where reconstruction of the jawbones is required.

Things to consider before a bone grafting procedure

The patient’s general health status, existing systemic diseases, and regularly used medications should be evaluated in detail before the procedure. The bone structure and the need for grafting should be determined through radiographic and tomographic examinations. Maintaining proper oral hygiene, brushing the teeth, and using an antiseptic mouthwash reduce the risk of infection.

Things to consider after a bone grafting procedure

In the first days after the procedure, the grafted area should be protected, and hard and hot foods should be avoided. Smoking and alcohol consumption are not recommended, as they may negatively affect bone healing. Medications prescribed by the physician should be taken regularly, and oral care should be performed carefully. Attending follow-up appointments is of great importance for monitoring healthy bone formation.
