Closed Sinus Lifting

Closed sinus lifting is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to enable implant placement in the upper posterior jaw when bone height is limited. It is based on the controlled elevation of the sinus floor through the implant site. Compared to open sinus lifting, it requires less surgical intervention and the healing process is generally more comfortable. The procedure is mostly performed in a clinical setting under local anesthesia or sedation.

What is closed sinus lifting?

Closed sinus lifting is a bone augmentation technique applied in cases where the existing bone height in the posterior upper jaw is insufficient for implant placement but still close to the required limit. After preparing the implant site, the sinus membrane is gently elevated using special hand instruments, and bone graft material may be added if necessary. In most cases, implant placement can be performed during the same session.

In which cases is closed sinus lifting performed?

It is applied in patients with limited bone loss in the posterior region of the upper jaw, in cases where the distance between the sinus floor and the jawbone is reduced. It is preferred in treatments that require less bone augmentation and allow implant placement in the same session.

Things to consider before a closed sinus lifting procedure

The patient’s general health status, existing systemic diseases, and regularly used medications should be evaluated in detail before the procedure. The sinus anatomy and bone quantity should be analyzed using radiographic imaging methods. Ensuring proper oral hygiene, brushing the teeth, and using an antiseptic mouthwash reduce the risk of infection.

Things to consider after a closed sinus lifting procedure

In the first days after the procedure, blowing the nose should be avoided, and the mouth should be kept open while sneezing. Smoking and alcohol consumption are not recommended as they may negatively affect the healing process. Medications prescribed by the physician should be used regularly, and proper oral hygiene should be maintained. Attending follow-up appointments is important for the successful completion of the treatment.
