Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Occlusal Splint Therapy
Temporomandibular joint disorders include functional and structural problems that occur in the temporomandibular joint area, where the lower jaw connects to the skull. These conditions may cause complaints such as pain, joint sounds, and restricted movement during chewing, speaking, and mouth opening. Occlusal splint therapy is an effective and preventive treatment method for controlling these disorders.
What are temporomandibular joint disorders?
Temporomandibular joint disorders may occur due to causes such as teeth clenching, teeth grinding (bruxism), improper bite relationships, stress, and trauma. These conditions can lead to pain in the joint and surrounding muscles, headaches and neck pain, and difficulty in opening the mouth. Early diagnosis is important for the success of treatment.
In which cases is occlusal splint therapy applied?
Occlusal splints are applied in patients who have teeth clenching and grinding habits and who experience pain and joint sounds in the temporomandibular joint. They are also preferred for controlling muscle-related jaw pain and bite disorders. Custom-made splints reduce the pressure on the joint.
Things to consider before treatment
Before treatment, a detailed temporomandibular joint examination and bite analysis should be performed. The patient’s complaints, habits, and any previous treatments are evaluated. When necessary, radiological imaging methods may be used.
Things to consider after treatment
It is important to use the splint for the duration and in the manner recommended by the dentist. Mild muscle tenderness may be experienced during the initial days; this condition is usually temporary. Regular cleaning of the splint and not neglecting follow-up appointments support the effectiveness and long-term success of the treatment.
