Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)
Root canal treatment is a procedure applied when the pulp tissue inside the tooth, which consists of living tissues, becomes inflamed or damaged. This endodontic treatment involves cleaning the infected tissues to allow the tooth to continue functioning healthily in the mouth. It is an important treatment option that helps preserve the tooth without extraction.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is the procedure of cleaning, disinfecting, and filling the nerve and blood vessel tissues inside the tooth’s root canals with special filling materials. Performed under local anesthesia, this treatment is generally completed painlessly. After the procedure, the tooth can continue to function for many years.
In which cases is root canal treatment applied?
Deep cavities, damage to the tooth nerve due to trauma, and spontaneous tooth pain are the main situations requiring root canal treatment. It is also applied in cases where sensitivity to hot and cold persists for a long time or an abscess develops in the tooth.
Precautions before root canal treatment
Before the treatment, the condition of the tooth should be evaluated through clinical examination and radiographs. The patient’s general health status and any medications being taken must be reported to the dentist. Although no special preparation is required, maintaining oral hygiene is recommended.
Precautions after root canal treatment
After the treatment, mild sensitivity and pain may be experienced for a few days. Pain relievers recommended by the dentist can be used. Hard foods should not be chewed with the treated tooth until the procedure is fully completed. After root canal treatment, a filling or crown is usually recommended. Regular check-ups help maintain the tooth’s health for a long time.
