Open Sinus Lifting

Open sinus lifting is a surgical procedure performed to enable implant placement in the upper posterior jaw when the bone height is insufficient. It involves the controlled elevation of the sinus cavity and filling the created space with a bone graft. This allows the implant to be placed in a healthy and stable manner. The procedure is mostly carried out in a clinical setting under local anesthesia or sedation, and in advanced cases, it can also be performed under general anesthesia in an operating room.

What is open sinus lifting?

Open sinus lifting is a surgical bone augmentation method applied when the distance between the sinus cavity and the jawbone in the upper posterior teeth region is insufficient. Through a small window opened in the sinus wall, the sinus membrane is lifted upward, and a bone graft is placed. This procedure aims to provide the bone volume necessary for the long-term success of the implant.

In which cases is open sinus lifting applied?

It is applied in patients who have experienced bone resorption after long-term tooth loss, and in cases where there is insufficient bone height for implants in the upper posterior jaw. Additionally, in situations where the implant cannot be placed in the same session, implant treatment can be planned after the bone formation is completed.

Precautions Before Open Sinus Lifting Procedure

The patient's overall health, existing systemic diseases, and regularly used medications should be thoroughly evaluated before the procedure. The sinus anatomy and bone quantity should be analyzed using radiographic imaging methods. Maintaining oral hygiene, brushing the teeth, and using antiseptic mouthwash before the procedure help reduce the risk of infection.

Precautions After Open Sinus Lifting

In the first days after the procedure, one should avoid blowing the nose, closing the mouth while sneezing, and any movements that may create pressure. Smoking and alcohol consumption are not recommended as they may negatively affect the healing process. Medications prescribed by the doctor should be taken regularly, and oral hygiene should be maintained. Attending follow-up appointments without interruption is important to monitor bone healing properly.
