Flap Surgery
Flap surgery is a surgical periodontal procedure applied in the treatment of advanced gum disease. The gum tissue is carefully lifted to directly expose the tooth roots and surrounding bone tissue. This allows detailed cleaning of tartar, bacterial deposits, and inflamed tissues. The aim is to restore gum health, eliminate inflammation, and preserve the supporting structures of the teeth.
What is flap surgery?
Flap surgery is a surgical periodontal treatment method in which the gum tissue is temporarily lifted to access deep pockets beneath the gums. After the cleaning procedure is completed, the gum tissue is repositioned and sutured. Performed under local anesthesia, this procedure provides effective and long-lasting results in advanced periodontal problems.
In which cases is flap surgery performed?
It is performed in cases with deep gum pockets, the onset of bone loss, and where dental scaling and curettage are insufficient. It is preferred in periodontal diseases accompanied by persistent gum bleeding, severe bad breath, and tooth mobility. The procedure is applied to stop the progression of the disease and prevent tooth loss.
Precautions Before Flap Surgery
Before the surgery, a detailed periodontal examination and radiographic assessment should be performed. The patient’s systemic conditions and medications must be fully reported to the dentist. Maintaining good oral hygiene before the surgery positively affects the healing process.
Precautions After Flap Surgery
In the first days after the surgery, mild pain, swelling, and bleeding may occur. Medications recommended by the dentist should be taken regularly, and the sutured area should not be disturbed. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided for the first 24 hours, and hard or hot foods should be avoided. Sutures are usually removed within 7–10 days, and the healing process is monitored through regular check-ups.
